This Sunday we have the great joy of celebrating the Easter sacraments with twenty-eight people! Since we were not able to celebrate the Easter Vigil together, the celebration was moved to Pentecost.
This is a great joy for our parish family. In normal years, we usually have a few catechumen who are baptized, a few candidates who are received into the Catholic Church from other Christian churches, and a few candidates who were baptized Catholic but were not raised in the faith or receive First Holy Communion or Confirmation.
This year, we have nine catechumen who will be baptized, seven candidates who are being received into the Catholic Church, and twelve candidates who will complete their Sacraments of Initation. This fruitfulness is a beautiful sign of how God is at work in our parish family. Praise God!
Father Andrew
Our 5pm Mass this Sunday will be a special Mass because of our RCIA participants receiving the Easter sacraments. We expect it to be about two hours long.
Due to our current occupancy restrictions, we expect space in church to be very limited at this Mass. (It will take a lot of room to seat our catechumen and candidates, their families, and their sponsors!)
If you normally attend the Sunday 5pm Mass, Father Rodolfo will also offer a more typical Pentecost Mass in the Walsh Palmetto Room at the same time.
We will also being doing a special live-stream of this Mass, for those who are not yet coming to Mass but would like to join our new brothers and sisters in this celebration.
Bishop Guglielmone is asking everyone to wear a face covering if they choose to come to Mass at this time.
"But what if I am not worried about being infected? Why should I have to wear a mask?"
Remember that this is not really the point. Wearing a mask is not so much about protecting yourself, but about protecting others. You could feel healthy but be unknowingly infected; with a mask the risk of spreading the virus to others through the air is greatly reduced. If we are all wearing masks, we are helping to provide a safer environment when we are gathered as a parish family.
We know it is not comfortable, but we can offer this up as a small sacrifice to Jesus in thanksgiving for his gift of the Holy Mass.
Information from the CDC about face coverings, the scientific reasons, and how to make your own at home, can be found here.
We also have a few dozen masks that were donated by a kind parishioner, if you have been unable to procure one yourself. They are available in the narthex as you enter the church. Please keep it and bring it back for the following weekends.
Our second weekend back at Mass again went very well. Our total attendance increased from 395 to 489, which is about 40% of our normal attendance at this time of the year. At the most-attended Masses, our numbers increased from about 70 to 100, so we still had plenty of room without need to use our overflow space.
For those concerned about the virus, a good option might be to come to one of our daily Masses instead. Attendance is low enough that you could have an entire section of pews to yourself if you desired.
Our parish staff has been working these first three weekends in teams of six to help serve at Mass and clean afterwards. We need to create similar teams of parishioners for each Mass to start serving in their place. Guided by a staff member, these hospitality teams would help with the tasks done in normal times by our greeters and ushers.
If you are comfortable coming back to Mass at this time, would you please consider helping? If so, please call or email us at the church office: 843-522-9555 or office@stpetersbeaufort.org.
Starting next Saturday, June 6, we will begin offering individual confessions again. We will send out more information through Flocknote later in the week.
We continue to pray for our sick, as well as our doctors and medical professionals. See our prayer lists and our Mass intentions here. Please let us know additional people to add for prayer.
We want to thank all of our parishioners who participated in this bible study. We hope that this six week study has helped you in your spiritual journey and helped build new friendships.
